Common SMEG Appliance Faults

Common SMEG Appliance Faults We Can Help With.

Below are some of the most common problems behind washing machine repair callouts in Dublin & North Wicklow. Whatever the symptom, we’ll diagnose the cause clearly and explain the best solution for you.

Drum Not Spinning

Carbon brushes wear down or the door interlock fails, leaving the drum turning slowly or not at all.

Won't Drain

A blocked pump filter or kinked drain hose is the most common cause of water left sitting in the drum.

Excessive Vibration

Worn suspension springs or dampers let the drum bang against the casing during the spin cycle.

Door Won't Unlock

A faulty door interlock mechanism can trap laundry inside even after the cycle finishes.

Leaking From The Base

Worn door seals or a failing pump housing are frequent culprits behind water pooling underneath.

Not Filling With Water

A faulty inlet valve or blocked filter can stop water reaching the drum at the start of a cycle.

Oven Not Heating

Oven fails to reach temperature.

Uneven Cooking

A failing fan motor or heating element can leave hot spots and cold spots across the oven cavity.

Door Won't Seal Properly

A worn or damaged door seal lets heat escape, driving up cook times and energy use.

Grill Not Working

A blown grill element is a common fault, often independent of the main oven heating circuit.

Display / Controls Unresponsive

A fault in the control board can leave the digital display frozen or buttons unresponsive.

Interior Light Not Working

A blown bulb or faulty light switch is usually behind a dark oven cavity during use.

Not Drying Properly

A blocked condenser or faulty heating element can leave laundry damp at the end of the cycle.

Stuck Mid Cycle

A fault in the cycle sensor or control board can cause the machine to stall between wash and dry phases.

Excessive Noise

Worn drum bearings often cause a loud rumbling or grinding sound in the drying phase.

Condensation Build Up

A blocked condenser unit can cause excess moisture to collect inside the machine or on the door glass.

Overheating During Drying

A faulty thermostat can cause the drying cycle to run too hot, risking damage to fabrics.

Won't Switch From Wash To Dry

A fault in the cycle timer or selector can prevent the machine progressing to the drying stage.

Unpleasant smells

Detergent residue and biofilm can build up around the seal, drawer and drum after frequent cool washes.

Dishes Coming Out Dirty

A blocked spray arm or worn wash pump can leave dishes with visible residue after a full cycle.

Not Draining

A clogged filter or faulty drain pump is the usual cause of standing water at the end of a cycle.

Door Latch Won't Shut

A worn door catch or faulty interlock switch can stop the cycle from starting at all.

Leaking From The Door

A perished door seal is a common cause of water escaping onto the kitchen floor during a wash.

Cycle Taking Too Long

A struggling heating element can cause the machine to repeatedly attempt to reach temperature, extending run times.

Not Heating Up

A blown thermal fuse or failing heating element can leave the drum turning with no warm air.

Clothes Not Drying Fully

A blocked lint filter or condenser restricts airflow, reducing drying efficiency.

Drum Not Turning

A snapped drive belt is one of the most common reasons the drum stops rotating.

Excessive Noise

Worn drum bearings or a failing belt often cause squealing or thumping during operation.

Not Switching On

A faulty door switch or blown thermal fuse can prevent the dryer from starting at all.

Overheating Or Burning Smell

A blocked vent or failing thermostat can cause the unit to run hotter than it should.

I can't say enough good things about your company. Tracy was very responsive with communications and booking the appointment and Ronan, the engineer, was prompt, courteous and a true craftsman. He had our Smeg oven fixed in no time at all, even took the time to fix the cabinethousing for the oven. If you need craftsmanship and a job well done, contact National Appliance Repairs. Excellent service from the time I made the phone call to the office. The lady was really helpful and even offered me advice on how to try to solve the issue myself before booking in for a call out. I couldn't resolve it, so booked in for Ronan to come out. He gave me a call to let me know he was on the way, was very friendly and helpful and solved the issue with my dishwasher. He even gave me tips on how to resolve the issue myself if it happened again, as well as on the type of dishwasher tabs and setting to use. Very highly recommended and would call again without hesitation if having any issues with appliances!

Do you repair SMEG appliances?

Yes! We’re experienced with the full SMEG range, including ovens, cookers, dishwashers, washing machines and more.

Our engineers are familiar with SMEG’s parts and common fault patterns, so repairs are diagnosed quickly and correctly the first time.

Not necessarily.

While SMEG parts can cost more than budget brands, most faults such as heating elements, door seals or control boards are straightforward and affordable to fix. We’ll always give you an upfront price before any work begins, so there are no surprises.

In most cases, repair is the better option. SMEG appliances are built to last, and a targeted repair is far cheaper than replacing the unit.

We’ll give you an honest recommendation based on the appliance’s age, the fault, and the cost of parts, so you can make the right call.

Most repairs are completed in a single visit, as our engineers carry a wide range of common SMEG parts with them. Where a specific part needs to be ordered, we’ll let you know the expected turnaround before booking the follow-up visit.

Yes, we use genuine or manufacturer-approved parts wherever possible to make sure your appliance performs as intended and your warranty status isn’t affected.

The most common issues we see are ovens not heating properly, dishwashers failing to drain, washing machine drums not spinning, and unusual noises or smells during use. If you’re experiencing any of these, it’s best to get it looked at before the fault worsens.

Yes, all our SMEG repairs are covered by a repair warranty, giving you peace of mind that the fix is built to last. If the same issue reoccurs within the warranty period, we’ll sort it at no extra cost.
